Ikpeazu Urges Federal Government to Investigate Nigerians' Dietary Habits Amid Concerns of Organ Failure
Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, former Governor of Abia State, is urging the validation of folk medicine in Nigeria as a crucial step towards addressing the increasing incidence of organ failures. In light of the rising cases of organ failure, particularly in the kidneys, Ikpeazu emphasizes the need for a comprehensive investigation into the dietary habits of Nigerians. He believes that understanding the causes of organ failure and finding solutions through the incorporation of folk medicine is essential.
Ikpeazu, a teacher and author specializing in Pharmacology and Environmental Biochemistry, shared these insights during a research products exhibition and award ceremony organized by the Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (NSBMB).
Expressing his concern about the surge in organ failure cases, Ikpeazu emphasized the importance of examining changes in consumption patterns that may contribute to poisoning and organ failure. He advocates for a thorough exploration of dietary factors that were not prevalent before the escalation of organ failure cases.
Additionally, the former Governor calls for collaborative efforts between biochemists and professionals from various disciplines to advance medicine and food technology. He stresses the significance of bridging the gap between research labs and industries to leverage the outcomes of biochemistry research for progress in medicine, food technology, and science overall.
Ikpeazu expresses hope for a future where industries recognize the value of the raw materials generated in biochemistry labs, acknowledging the hard work of biochemists and fostering a partnership for advancements in various fields.
Ikpeazu, recognized as a silent achiever by NSBMB President Prof. Matthew Wegwu, was bestowed with a prestigious Legacy Award for his role as a 'Transformative Scholar in Leadership.'
Commending Ikpeazu's significant contributions to the field of Biochemistry, Wegwu remarked, "Your Excellency, Sir, we are immensely proud of you. Biochemists are not known for making noise, and you embody that trait perfectly. As we delved into your records and achievements during your tenure as governor of Abia State, one thing became evident – you are a transformative scholar in leadership."
Wegwu highlighted Ikpeazu's impressive body of work, citing over 45 published articles in Environmental Biochemistry and praising the governor's publications and journals. He also commended Ikpeazu's role as a teacher in environmental biochemistry, recalling his attendance at the public presentation of the governor's co-authored book, "The Biochemistry of Environmental Pollution."
Expressing gratitude for Ikpeazu's representation during his governorship, Wegwu acknowledged the pride the NSBMB holds for the silent achiever.
Accompanying Ikpeazu at the event were notable dignitaries, including Prof. Anthony Agbazuere, Rt. Hon. Uzo Azubuike, Hon. Chimaobi Ebisike, Chief John Okiyi Kalu, Hon. Erondu Uchenna Erondu, Enyinnaya Appolos, Chief Jude Ndukwe, and others.
