Samsung Boosts Digital Education for Young Nigerians Through Investment in Soft Skills
Nigeria may soon drastically reduce the labour market which is populated by young Nigerian school leavers and those who did not even make it to school, due to poverty.
This is as Samsung Nigeria has taken to providing soft skills to teeming Nigerian youths through a digital training programme tagged Samsung Innovation Campus.
In collaboration with the Lagos State government through the Lagos State Technical & Vocational Education Board (LASTVEB), Samsung is launching a program aimed at providing students and unemployed youths with hands-on experience in key technologies of the 4th Industrial Revolution, including AI, IoT, and Big Data. This initiative is designed to nurture participants into the next generation of the workforce, aligning them with the demands of the evolving digital landscape.
Charlie Lee, Managing Director of Samsung Nigeria, emphasized that this program will play a pivotal role in shaping Nigerian youths to navigate the challenges of the new normal in a smart and innovative manner. Ibukun Adewole, Head of Service at Samsung, highlighted the company's commitment to social responsibility in Nigeria, focusing on empowerment through education initiatives.
Samsung's dedication to education in Nigeria is evident in its previous initiatives, such as the Samsung Engineering Academy in Lagos, which operated until 2018. This academy provided valuable skills training, leading to the employment of approximately 140 graduates at Samsung or other service centers. The Samsung Innovation Campus, part of this new program, not only imparts technological education but also emphasizes soft skills training, enhancing participants' employability and their ability to apply their knowledge effectively.
Reflecting on Samsung's long-standing presence in Nigeria, Charlie Lee noted that the company established its Nigeria Office in 2005 and has been actively contributing to the business landscape in Lagos for 18 years. Samsung Heavy Industries, an affiliated company, also entered the Nigerian market in 2011. Lee emphasized Nigeria's significance, describing Samsung as a beloved global company in the country, supplying products integral to the lives of Nigerians, including TVs, smartphones, ACs, washing machines, refrigerators, and microwaves.
